Manufacturers Supply Industry Borax Anhydrous

Short Description:

The properties of anhydrous borax are white crystals or colorless glassy crystals, the melting point of α orthorhombic crystal is 742.5 ° C, and the density is 2.28; It has strong hygroscopicity, dissolves in water, glycerin, and slowly dissolves in methanol to form a solution with a concentration of 13-16%. Its aqueous solution is weakly alkaline and insoluble in alcohol. Anhydrous borax is an anhydrous product obtained when borax is heated to 350-400°C. When placed in the air, it can absorb moisture into borax decahydrate or borax pentahydrate.

    Product Description

Anhydrous borax/sodium tetraborate appearance is white crystalline or colorless vitreous crystal. The melting point of alpha orthorhombic crystal is 742.5 ℃, and the density is 2.28; The melting point of beta orthorhombic crystal is 742.5℃, and the density is 2.28. It has strong hygroscopicity and can soluble in water and glycerol. It is slowly dissolved in methanol to form a solution with a concentration of 13-16%. the aqueous solution is weak alkaline, insoluble in alcohol. Anhydrous borax is the product obtained when borax is heated to 350-450 ℃. When placed in air, it can be hygroscopically changed into borax decahydrate or borax pentahydrate.

A highly concentrated source of boric oxide for glazes. Anhydrous borax is made by burning or fusing hydrated borax. It thus contains little or no water of crystallization and does not rehydrate under normal storage conditions. Anhydrous borax is water soluble, but considerably less so than raw borax (in aqueous solution it can provide slow release of boron).

This material does not puff or swell during melting (minimizing loss of powder in kilns with strong drafts), and melts easier (the swelling in other forms can create a porous state with an insulation factor that slows melting). Anhydrous borax is an excellent glass former, it does not puff or swell during melting thus fewer production problems result.

This material is used as a source of B2O3 in the manufacture of many different types of borosilicate glass, including heat and chemical resistant glasses, illumination glasses, optical lenses, medical and cosmetic containers, hollow microspheres and glass beads. It has a higher bulk density and melts more rapidly than raw forms of borax. It also provides a source of sodium.

    Application

Used in  agriculture, fertilizer, glass, enamel, ceramics, wood preservation, mining, refining

    1. As the carrier of lubricant in metal wire drawing, it is used as stabilizer and skeleton in refractory materials.
    2. It is used as a cosolvent for high-quality glass, glaze flux, welding flux, non-ferrous metals and alloys.
    3. It is used as retarder for cement and concrete, pH buffer in water system and emulsifier for paraffin.
    4. Anhydrous borax is the basic raw material for preparing boron containing compounds. Almost all boron containing compounds can be producedby borax.

    Uses of Borax

Borax is used in various household laundry and cleaning products, including the 20 Mule Team Borax laundry booster, Boraxo powdered hand soap, and some tooth bleaching formulas.

Borate ions (commonly supplied as boric acid) are used in biochemical and chemical laboratories to make buffers, e.g. for polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of DNA and RNA, such as TBE buffer (borate buffered tris-hydroxymethylaminomethonium)or the newer SB buffer or BBS buffer (borate buffered saline) in coating procedures. Borate buffers (usually at pH 8) are also used as preferential equilibration solutions in dimethyl pimelimidate (DMP) based crosslinking reactions.

Borax as a source of borate has been used to take advantage of the co-complexing ability of borate with other agents in water to form complex ions with various substances. Borate and a suitable polymer bed are used to chromatograph non-glycated hemoglobin differentially from glycated hemoglobin (chiefly HbA1c), which is an indicator of long-term hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus.

A mixture of borax and ammonium chloride is used as a flux when welding iron and steel. It lowers the melting point of the unwanted iron oxide (scale), allowing it to run off. Borax is also used mixed with water as a flux when soldering jewelry metals such as gold or silver, where it allows the molten solder to wet the metal and flow evenly into the joint. Borax is also a good flux for "pre-tinning" tungsten with zinc, making the tungsten soft-solderable. Borax is often used as a flux for forge welding.

In artisanal gold mining, borax is sometimes used as part of a process known as the borax method (as a flux) meant to eliminate the need for toxic mercury in the gold extraction process, although it cannot directly replace mercury. Borax was reportedly used by gold miners in parts of the Philippines in the 1900s.There is evidence that, in addition to reducing the environmental impact, this method achieves better gold recovery for suitable ores and is less expensive. This borax method is used in northern Luzon in the Philippines, but miners have been reluctant to adopt it elsewhere for reasons that are not well understood. The method has also been promoted in Bolivia and Tanzania.

A rubbery polymer sometimes called Slime, Flubber, 'gluep' or 'glurch' (or erroneously called Silly Putty, which is based on silicone polymers), can be made by cross-linking polyvinyl alcohol with borax. Making flubber from polyvinyl acetate-based glues, such as Elmer's Glue, and borax is a common elementary science demonstration.
